The Richards Bay Ski-Boat Club is situated on the north-eastern side of the Richards Bay port across the road from Alkantstrand which recently was awarded Blue Flag status. The club provides excellent facilities as a base for anglers fishing from all types of craft whether it be sportfishers, ski boats, bay boats, jet skis or fishing skis. It is also the base for the Zululand Fishing Ski Club and the Zululand Police Deep Sea Angling club.
Richards Bay, the venue for the annual uMhlathuze Fishing Festival (affectionately still known as the "Bonanza") which is held over the Easter weekend, is part of the City of uMhlathuze and is situated on the South East Coast of Africa in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province of South Africa. It is one of the premier all round fishing destinations in South Africa where big game, game and bottom fishing is practiced. It is known as the "Couta Mecca" of South Africa and no other venue in South Africa produces the number and size of "crocodile" King Mackerel found in the Richards Bay waters. More recently it also became very popular with anglers looking for Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna of which the numbers and sizes caught here have no equal on the Kwa-Zulu Natal Coast. It is therefore no surprise that RBSBC was chosen as the venue for the annual international SADSAA Billfish Classic Tournament. The Club seriously promote the tag and release of billfish and the "only keep what you can use" policy for all other species in order to preserve our valuable resource for the future.
The motto of the uMhlathuze city management is "Vision into Action", a motto easily shared by the Richards Bay Ski Boat Club in developing the club and its facilities to a level that equals the best in the world. The 17th FIPS-M World Trolling Championships held at the club during January 2008, was described as "the best yet" by FIPS Officials as well as participating anglers.
The club showed a consistent growth in membership over the past 5-6 years and is now most probably the largest deep sea angling club in South Africa. The members of the club are actively involved in the sport of deep sea angling and in addition to competing in the club's social competitions, members are often found participating in inter club, inter provincial, national and international events. The development of new anglers (young and old) is also a priority and tackle talks, fishing workshops and development seminars are held on a regular basis.
If you are a keen deep sea angler and have not fished the fish rich waters off Richards Bay, experienced the hospitality of the people of Zululand and have not yet made use of the excellent facilities of the Richards Bay Ski-Boat Club, it is time to consider planning your next fishing trip in this direction for a fishing experience of a lifetime.
